THE caller will claim to have detected a virus
on your computer and ask you to turn it on and
follow their instructions. Doing so gives this
stranger complete access to your system under
the guise of fxing your problem.
The question of what this fx will cost is
avoided until you are well and truly hooked
then a payment of US$300 is demanded with a
warning that failure to remedy the problem might
result in your computer suffering a 'blow up'.
These guys may claim to be in New Zealand
but my experience tells me that is not the case
- one caller provided me with a Queen Street,
Auckland address but when asked what the
weather was like there at the time stated it
miserable day with rain bucketing down.
The provision of a New Zealand phone
number is not proof of their location.
1. No caller, wherever they are from, can
know whether you have a computer virus
problem. In fact some of these calls are made to
people who do not even own a computer.
2. Giving the caller access to your computer
is potentially very dangerous. That access may
allow the downloading of software that will make
you vulnerable to identity theft and can provide
access to your on line banking and credit card
3. Microsoft do not make phone calls to
private computer users in this manner.
4. Tell people you know about this scam - use
a local, reputable, company for your computer

COMPUTER VIRUS PHONE SCAM - STILL RUNNING
Unsolicited phone calls from gentlemen (ladies too) with accents emanating
from the Indian Sub Continent continue to cause irritation and in some cases a
diminished bank balance amongst the good citizens of Hawke's Bay.
Have a family plan
for dealing with
emergencies and bear
in mind the vulnerable
in your street.

Thanks to all those who attended the
Neighbourhood Watch meetings recently which
were well organised by Willie Paul. I managed
to get to one of these meetings and it was great
to get feedback from locals and to hear their
It's been a busy time for Police lately with the
amount of burglaries being committed in both
Napier and Hastings areas of real concern.
There have been several in the Bay View area
which appear to have been committed during
the day, and again the main items targeted by
burglars being fat screen TVs, tools, lap top
computers, I pods, mobile phones and cash. A
motor bike was also taken from a shed on a
property in Onehunga Road recently.
Honesty boxes at roadside fruit stalls
have also recently been targeted during the
day in Franklin Road and Scarrott Road and
information is sought from anyone who may
have seen a dark coloured car in either of
these roads on the 31/05/11 and again on
the 08/06/11. A reminder to others who rely
on honesty boxes for gate sales to make sure
that the cash boxes are secured to something
strong, and to empty them regularly. Again if
you suspect that a vehicle or persons in your
area are up to no good contact the Police
straight away if possible.
With meat prices at an all time high stock
thefts are becoming a major concern. If you
own a farm or a lifestyle block keep a good
record of your stock numbers, and make sure
your roadside gates and fences are in good
condition. Night time is the most common
time for stock to be stolen so if your dogs are
barking for no apparent reason, you hear a
shot or you see vehicle headlights/spotlights in
your paddock or road please give us a call.
