Engaging ensemble returns to NZ

Acclaimed New Zealand pianist
John Chen returns to the
country this month with his
Saguaro Trio, and will play at
the Municipal Theatre on
Saturday, July 30.
In 2001, Chen was a member
of the winning quartet at the
annual Chamber Music Contest,
and went on to be the youngest
ever winner of the 2004 Sydney
International Piano Compe-
tition, also winning prizes for
the best performance of works
by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert,
chamber music and concerto.
While working towards his
artist diploma at Colburn Con-
servatory in Los Angeles, John
formed the Saguaro Trio with
musicians Luanne Homazy
(violin) and Peter Myers (cello).
The ensemble burst onto the
international music scene with
stunning successes in the
world's most exclusive chamber
In 2009 they solidified their
reputation as one of the most
thoughtful and engaging young
ensembles in today's classical
music world by taking first place
at the International Chamber
Music Competition in Hamburg,
where they also won the special
prize for the best performance of
a work by Brahms.
The programme for the
Napier concert includes a newly
commissioned piece, ?'' or Why
Gryphons Shouldn't Dance,b
Christchurch composer Alwyn
Westbrooke, and works from
Hummel, Arensky and Brahms.

Short plays performed
Shorts, a series of three short
plays by international play-
wrights, will be presented by
Hawke's Bay Opera House on
Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July.
The plays -- Dog by Daniel
Keene, Medea Redux by Neil
Lebute, directed by Sally Rich-
ards and Request Stop by Harold
Pinter, directed by Megan Pea-
cock, give audiences a chance to
see diverse theatre.
Shorts will be performed on
the stage of the Opera House, a
unique experience, and after the
production there will be a ques-
tion and answer session with the
actors and directors.
Theatrecomrades is commit-
ted to bringing quality,
innovative theatre to Hawke's
Bay, offering an opportunity for
audiences to experience profes-
sional theatre, and the company
wishes to support and foster
local emerging and established
performers, employing profes-
sional theatre makers to provide
mentoring and experience.
Performing in Dog is profes-
sional actor Sam Bunkell from
Auckland, who was also in last
year's Shorts, Melissa Billington
from Wellington in Medea
Redux and Andy Brigden in
Request Stop, who also both
performed in Theatrecomrades'
production of The Vagina

Peacock both have a Masters of
Theatre Arts from Toi Whakaari
