Magpies rack up record victory
Flanker Adam Bradey in
action in the Magpies'
record 39-10 win over
North Harbour in the ITM
Cup last Thursday night.
Hooker Hika Elliot was due to act
as stand-in skipper again for the
Magpies' ITM Cup championship
clash against Tasman at Napier's
McLean Park on Tuesday night,
with regular captain Mike Coman
still suffering from a minor back
Magpies team manager Neil
Webber said Coman was not too
far away'' from a return, and was
in contention to play against
premiership side Wellington this
Friday night at McLean Park.
In Coman's absence, Elliot had
a great captain's run in the
Magpies record 39-10 win over
North Harbour last Thursday.
The five tries to one romp was
all the more impressive given the
number of injuries Magpies
players sustained during the
Kahn Fotuali'i was forced to
move out from halfback early in
the game when first-five Daniel
Kirkpatrick left the field injured,
only for replacement halfback
Chris Eaton to also be forced from
the field in the 32nd minute after
taking a heavy tackle.
Fotuali'i returned to half back
with Andrew Horrell slotting in at
first-five and landing an impress-
ive four conversions and two pen-
alties with his accurate boot.
Webber said Kirkpatrick had
suffered leg bruising and would be
considered for the game against
Wellington, but Eaton's chest
injury meant he was unlikely to
play this week.
First-half tries to Tua Saseve
and Sona Tuamalolo gave the
Magpies a 17-3 lead over Harbour
at the break, and they went on
with it in the second half.
Sustained pressure led to wing
Tu Umaga Marshall taking the
ball from a ruck and strolling
through a huge gap in the defence
Elliott looked to have scored
just after the three-quarter mark
had been passed but television
evidence showed he had knocked
the ball on.
The five-metre scrum offered
little respite for North Harbour
and moments later after a maul
Fotuali'i moved the ball on the
blindside to wing Kaka for an easy
More vigorous forward play and
continuity work saw replacement
hooker Hikairo Forbes drive
through on the blindside to score
for Horrell to add the conversion.
It was minor reward but the
best North Harbour effort in the
resulted in a 78th min-
ute try for Mat Lua-
