Flying fingers: Jazz pianist Bill Cunliffe will
play in Napier.
Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, com-
poser and arranger Bill Cunliffe will
appear at a Hawke's Bay Jazz Club concert
this Sunday, August 14, along with the
New Zealand School of Music Big Band 2
featuring Rodger Fox and special guest
vocalist Erna Ferry.
Cunliffe is well known for his swinging
and lyrical pianism and his creativity and
invention as a composer and arranger of
He graduated from Duke University and
the Eastman School of Music, where he
won several Down Beat awards.
After graduation, he taught at Central
State University in Wilberforce, Ohio and
his first major jazz gig was pianist and
arranger with Buddy Rich, touring Europe
with Frank Sinatra.
He later performed with Ray Brown, Joe
Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Gol-
son, Woody Shaw and James Moody.
He was the 1989 winner of the Thelon-
ious Monk International Jazz Piano Award
and has received stipends from the
National Endowment for the Arts.
Nominated for three Grammys and two
Emmys as a composer and arranger, Cun-
liffe's latest project is film On The
Shoulders of Giants, a documentary about
jazz and basketball in Harlem in the 1930s.
He has composed extensively for big band,
chamber groups, choir and orchestra and
his concerto for trumpet and orchestra,
fourth stream . . . La Banda, was recently
premiered in New York and Philadelphia.
Former Taradale High School pupil and
member of the HB Jazz Club Big Band,
Daniel Windsor, returns to Napier to play
trumpet in the New Zealand School of
Music Big Band 2.
The concert will be held at the Napier
Cosmopolitan Club on Sunday, August 14 at
5.30pm (doors open 5pm). Members $5,
public $15, school students free.
