on third conviction
Caught: Sacha Beacham photographed while
representing a client in an earlier case at Hastings.
Hastings lawyer Sacha Beacham has been ordered
to pay a fine and been disqualified from driving for
nine months for her third drink-driving charge.
Beacham, who has her own Hastings law prac-
tice and lives in Napier, was sentenced in the
Auckland District Court on Friday after earlier
this year asking for her case to be transferred
from Hastings so she didn t have to deal with
probation officers she knew through her work as a
In July she failed to turn up for sentencing in
Auckland because she objected to media
applications to take photos of her in court.
On Friday Judge Brooke Gibson denied media
applications to photograph Beacham.
Beacham, a petite and well-dressed blonde
woman, had in May pleaded guilty to the charge
in the Hastings District Court.
She was pulled over by police on January 15 at
2.36am because of her speed and manner of driv-
ing. She blew a reading of 561mcg of alcohol per
litre of breath. The legal limit is 400mcg.
She was previously convicted of drink-driving in
2007 and 2002.
The maximum sentence for a third drink-
driving offence is two years in prison.
In sentencing Beacham, Gibson said he took
into account her early guilty plea and that she had
taken it upon herself to undergo alcohol
However, he said if she was to appear before the
court on another similar charge it was unlikely it
would be dealt with in the way of a fine. She was
fined $1200 and court costs of about $130.
Beacham was admitted to the bar in 2005 but
has been unable to take clients since May while
waiting to be sentenced.
She was at pains to point out to in-court media
that she has been still able to take other non-legal
Beacham said she would now have to deal with
any disciplinary action from the New Zealand Law
Society as a result of her third conviction.
