HB XI stumbles at finish
The Central Districts' Chapple and
Cave Cup competitions were the
focal point of a busy weekend of
cricket in Hawke's Bay.
Hawke's Bay made it to Sunday's
final of the Chapple Cup, beating
Nelson in the semifinal, but went
down by 35 runs to Manawatu.
Manawatu won the toss and
batted first. In reply, Hawke's Bay
looked good at 100 for 3, but col-
lapsed to be all out for 155.
Wairarapa defeated Marlborough
to win the Cave Cup.
In premier men's club cricket on
Sunday, Napier Tech had an easy
win over Central; Taradale beat
Havelock North and Cornwall
accounted for NOBM.

and Stephen Hindmarch.

Young striker Hamish Watson
will be rushed into the starting
line-up for Hawke's Bay Unit-
ed's first ASB Premiership home
match against Manawatu this
Sunday, as the Bay side seeks to
re-discover its goal-scoring form.
After amassing nine goals in
three pre-season victories, Kin-
etic Electrical Hawke's Bay
United were kept scoreless in a
3-0 away drubbing by cham-
pions Waitakere in their season-
opener. Watson, 18, missed the
defeat due to his involvement
with club side Lower Hutt City
in the Napier City Rovers-
hosted national under-19 tour-
nament over Labour Weekend.
Watson was named player of
the tournament after finishing
level in the golden boot
standings with 11 goals. United
head coach Matt Chandler is
banking on Watson's ability to
find the back of the net to help
resurrect the fortunes of his
once goal-happy team.
[Watson's] involvement in
the under-19 tournament was
one of the conditions when we
signed him from Lower Hutt.
But with Milos [Nikolic] also
out injured, it kind of came back
to bite us,'' Chandler said.
New signing Nikolic, the
premiership's second top goal
scorer last season, sat out the
away loss to Waitakere with a
knee injury, but Chandler was
confident he would at least be on
the bench against Manawatu.
Chandler will also be relieved
his captain Bill Robertson will
be making his first appearance
of the season after serving a
Robertson's understanding with
his fellow centre-back Danny
Wilson was missed against Wai-
takere, and his presence will
allow Adam Cowan to return to

I said after the Waitakere
game not to judge us until we're
at full strength; that remains
true,'' Chandler said.
We missed that spine of
players we had. I believe our
season starts this weekend.''
