Business picks up -- at last
but Taradale is
Taradale retailers have had to diversify
to survive as hard economic times drag
on, says Taradale Shopping Centre
Association secretary Carolyn Pugh.
A recession combined with major dis-
ruption to the shopping centre during the
Gloucester St upgrade, which began in
May 2010, was an ordeal for shopkeepers.
We ve had it really tough without a
doubt for the last 18 months since the
upgrade, Ms Pugh says.
We had a year with the streets dug up
and people stayed away and it was very,
very difficult and very stressful.
The $3m redevelopment was officially
opened in April.
For a long time out here there was
such a negative feel -- it was like a ghost
town -- it had died, she says.
Then we had the introduction of paid
Some people didn t like that but
they ve come round to the idea and in the
last month it s really picked up and new
businesses opening is a good sign.
With warmer weather the new street
trees are looking great, flowers are
blooming, there are more people around
and they re spending .
A lot of Taradale retailers have diver-
sified their businesses because it was
adapt or die .
Ms Pugh s Gowns on Gloucester, for
example, used to sell only bridal wear but
now stocks children s wear and costume
jewellery. A bookshop now sells wool as
The recession hasn t ended, it s just
been around so long it s become normal,
The shopping centre association has
been working hard to promote the area
with a new logo, branding -- Hawke s
Bay s concert capital -- and website,
There is now only one empty shop in
Gloucester St, the old Cannings variety
store. Cannings moved to refitted prem-
ises over the road, Pen to Paper (formerly
Gloucester Books) had moved to where
Out East was and a Thai restaurant
would be opening soon in the former Trio
Restaurant premises. New owners of
Paper Plus had also refitted their store.
New businesses to town included
Amaze gifts and a Millers womenswear
There is scope for more new retail, on
The Busy Corner site for example, and
the association is working to attract
retailers rather than service businesses.
A major project for the new year is a
midwinter black tie function to celebrate
successes and lift service levels.
$210,000 for spray park
Fabulous fun: Napier
is getting a zero
depth water play
facility like this one in
The Napier City Council has
agreed to allocate an additional
$210,000 from its capital reserve
surplus to complete the Napier
Aquatic Centre Spray Park
A master plan had been devel-
oped for the whole of the outdoor
area that included a spray park,
hard and soft landscaping and a
dry playground activity area.
The master plan also took into
account the placement of the
new Plunket Centre, and the
relocation of the sand volleyball
The planning exercise demon-
strated what could be achieved
over a longer term, using a
phased approach as funding
became available, council heard
at a meeting this month.
After discussing whether the
entire development should be
undertaken at once in order to
be completed in time for sum-
mer, or phased in over a two or
three year period, councillors
voted in favour of the one-stage
option because it would reduce
construction time and provide
an enhanced family experience
for most of the summer.
