Rain stymies Stags run
Top tips: CD Stag Peter Borren, captain of the Dutch national cricket side, gives some catching tips
to Napier's Flynn Allen at Nelson Park last week.
Rain may have denied the Cen-
tral Districts Stags a chance to
win the Ford Trophy one-dayer
against the Wellington Firebirds
last Wednesday at Nelson Park,
but it was much better weather
when promising local juniors
enjoyed coaching sessions con-
ducted by the first-class
The Stags were on top early
and had their opponents strug-
gling at 5 for 78, before the
Firebirds managed to reach 8 for
205 when rain stopped play with
four overs left in the first
Unfortunately, the rain kept
the players from walking back
on to Nelson Park after the
lunch break, with the umpires
deciding to abandon the match
Two days earlier, Nelson Park
was bathed in sunshine as about
40 players from Hawke's Bay's
under-12, under-13 and under-
14 representative teams spent
an afternoon refining their bat-
ting, bowling and fielding skills
in sessions led by half a dozen
Stags players, including Peter
Ingram, Ben Smith, Peter Bor-
ren, Carl Cachopa, Michael
Mason and Adam Milne.
Big match looms for United
Most coaches bemoan the stop-start nature of the
ASB Premiership prior to Christmas, when most
teams are forced to wait weeks for a match while
the top two clubs battle their Pacific neighbours in
But Kinetic Electrical Hawke's Bay United
player-turned-coach, Chris Greatholder, says time
off the pitch has been a blessing in disguise for his
confidence-sapped team, which is coming off suc-
cessive defeats and heads into this Sunday's
rematch against Waikato after a 14-day break.
United's last match was a shock 2-0 loss against
the previously winless Waikato in the new White
Ribbon Cup on December 3.
To be honest, having last weekend off may
actually be a blessing. We are struggling with
injuries so hopefully that extra time will help us
out,'' Greatholder says.
Six United players are currently on the treat-
ment table and the club is still coming to terms
with the loss of their star signing, former Waikato
striker Milos Nikolic, for the rest of the campaign
due to injury.
Milos has left the group, unfortunately. His
scan reported he has suffered a ruptured anterior
cruciate ligament, which means he will be out for
at least four months,'' says Greatholder.
But if Greatholder can rapidly secure some new
players to overcome his lengthy injury list, he's
confident United still have a chance for a top-four
We have signed Dale Higham, a right-winger
from Manawatu, who will give us some much-
needed balance on the right-hand side and we're
in advanced talks with two other players about
joining the squad.''
Greatholder's immediate goal is to atone for the
White Ribbon Cup defeat by Waikato at
Hamilton's Porritt Park this Sunday.
We've seen what they've got now. If we win it
and other results go our way, we could even be in
top-four spot. It's a big game for us, definitely.''
