Eyes to the skies: RNZAF Red Checkers team will show off their skills during this year's Art Deco Weekend.

Celebrating the Royal New Zea-
land Air Force s 75th anniver-
sary, the Red Checkers team
will show off their skills in
Napier during the upcoming Art
Chosen as the theme for this
year s Geon Art Deco Weekend,
the RNZAF will entertain in the
sky and on the ground.

Len Searle said a large number
of vintage airplanes would be
flying in for the weekend of
February 17 including a De
Havilland Dragon Rapide light
This aircraft, originally
designed in 1933, became the
main stay short haul passenger
aircraft used by commercial
airlines all over the world.
This fully-restored aircraft
was built in 1940 and is in Swiss
Airline livery, he said.
During the weekend the De
Havilland will be offering scenic
flights from the Hawke s Bay
Airport -- a marvellous oppor-
tunity to experience flying in
genuine Art Deco style and
Mr Searle said the public is
welcome to view a large number
of privately-owned vintage
planes up close at the Aero Club,
for a gold coin donation. Access
will be through the airport s

Checkers air force display team
will give their usual popular twi-
light displays over Marine Pde

War II P40 Kittyhawk fighter, a
P51 Mustang, about four Tiger

ter will also be on hand.
As well as the aerobatic dis-
plays, on the ground there will
be RNZAF promotional activi-
ties and a recruitment stand.
A concert by the Central Band
of the RNZAF will be on stage in
Napier s Art Deco Municipal
Theatre in Tennyson Street from
noon Friday, with tickets, $12,
available from Ticketek.
