The Spirit of Napier Lions Club is
inviting keen gardeners to take part in a
garden workshop facilitated by Colin
Harvey-James, on Sunday, March 11.
Intended to inspire and assist those
keen to enter the competition in years to
come, Mr Harvey-James will be assisted
by garden writer and former Sang s Gar-
den Centre owner Nell Sang-Lim and
newly-retired Goverment House head
gardener Kevin Graham, who has a
special interest in propagation.
For the workshop, I want to focus
mainly on garden design and planting to
suit the location, said Mr Harvey-
You can love a plant and struggle for
years to keep it alive but gardeners have
to be vicious and sacrifice some things. It
removes a lot of stress.
So if we can help people to change the
look of their gardens -- and it doesn t take
much with careful placement of plants
and pots -- the end result is worth it.
Mr Harvey-James worked in the
design field for more than 50 years in
areas as diverse as window dressing, fur-
niture and home and garden design.
He served a five-year design appren-
ticeship under tutors he admired and
respected and felt running the workshop

It really comes down to how much
time you have to spend on the garden and
there are many little things people just
don t think about, he said.
Beauty comes at a price and if you can
avoid basic mistakes, there s more time
to enjoy what you have created.
The How to Create a Winning Gar-
den workshop will take place at Mr

where, in addition to his home garden, he
has planted the Friends Bush .

The Hawke s Bay Regional Council is officially
opening its 187 kilometres of walking and cycling
trails on Saturday, with an 8km bike ride from
Pettigrew Green in Taradale to the Puketapu
Domain, in Dartmoor Rd, Puketapu.
The council is encouraging riders to fancy
dress themselves and their bikes for the chance to
win prizes, including two Cruiser bikes.
The trail for the opening is flat, so it is family-
friendly, said council spokesman Drew Broadley.
The aim is for everyone to slow down and enjoy
this particularly scenic stretch of Hawke s Bay.
At the Puketapu Domain there ll be a free bar-
becue, with coffee and ice creams for sale, activi-
ties for the kids . . . and, of course, the big prize
The first off-road path opened in 2002.
The regional council has worked with Napier
and Hastings councils and community groups to
build up the trails, with $5.5 million spent so far.
